Lingerie Fabric Just as there are many styles and colours to choose from when selecting lingerie there is also a wide variety of fabrics, including sheer lingerie. Chiffon : This is a sheer fabric made with a simple weave of tightly twisted crepe yarns. Originally made in silk it is now available in other fibres. Is is usually used for nighties, babydolls, camisoles and robes . Cotton : A soft white vegetable fibre from the cotton plant that is composed mainly of cellulose. Cotton is extremely comfortable, absorbant, durable and washable. Cotton however is prone to shrinkage so when choosing lingerie it is advisable to select a larger size. In some cases pieces of lingerie contain a cotton blend. Don't be put off by this, some fabrics such as spandex can make the lingerie even more comfortable. Elastic : A stretchable fiber, yarn or tape, generally made from natural or synthetic rubber. Usually covered with another fabric elastic is found a lot in lingerie Georgette : Crepe woven both lenghtwise and crosswise from twisted silkor polyester yarns to produce a dull but delicately textured grainy surface. Opaque georgettes were popular in the '80s but nowadays georgette for lingerie is usually sheer. The pebbly weave of georgette gives transparancy but has slighly more coverage and weight than chiffon. Microfiber : This is a synthetic fiber that is lightweight, ultrafine,silky, and durable. Often blended with elastic, microfiber makes lingerie mold to the body. Lingerie made of microfiber looks supersmooth under clothing. Nylon : Lingerie made of nylon has the light feel of silk but is stronger. and retains it's shape better.Nylon is somethimes combined with other fabrics and is used to make every form of lingerie. Polyester : A very popular material and used extensively for lingerie, it is strong , easy to care for and quick drying.
